You Must Have an Account in Order to Comment
If you have not registered, you must first create an account. Click on the “New Blog” link on the bottom right on the HOME page. You will be asked to create a USERNAME. It’s best if this is your real name so we know who you are. You must your Otis email address to be able to create an account on this server. Select “just a username.” Click NEXT. An email will be sent to your otis email account with your username and password. With that information you can login.
How to Leave a Comment
Once you have an account, click “Login.” Once logged in, click on a category or a specific posting for which you wish to leave a reply. Click on “Read Full Post” or click on the title of the post of interest. Scroll to the bottom of the page and enter you comment in the box. When finished, click on “Submit Comment.” An email will be sent to a moderator who will then approve the comment and post it.

Otis Faculty are enthusiastically encouraged to consider writing for this blog. We are interested in everything from teaching tips to theoretical musings. Accepted postings will be compensated through Jones grant funding.
Submission Guidelines: If you are interested in submitting writing, please send a short email to Debra Ballard, the Editor and Blog Chief. Provide a sentence or two about the subject of your writing and say what category it falls into. Finished pieces should be about 500-600 words long. Sue Maberry will handle arrangements for payment of the honorarium once the writing has been accepted. Contact her if you want more details.

I would be very interested to hear from other faculty regarding an issue of pedagogy. Namely, when you approach discussion in a course how do you engage those students who are less inclined to speak in class? I often find that there are a select group of students who dominate a given discussion and those students predisposed to remain quiet. My concern is with those students who are clearly struggling in the class and do not participate in class. Often they are not able to articulate where they have fallen behind and what they do not understand. Usually I have met with these students one on one outside of class but it still does not resolve the quietness in class.
